Slingshot Aurum is a limited sculpture edition of 50, made of bronze. Taking part of its name from the Latin for 'gold,' the surface is immaculately coated with several powders including gold, silver, copper and pearl, then finished with platinum leaf and bronze paint. To create Slingshot, Jean was inspired by the classic Surrealist film, Un Chien Andalou (1929), in particular, the iconic scene where the protagonists' eye is sliced open with a razor blade. In Jean's sculpture, this visceral gesture is retold by depicting a young boy who has taken out his eyeball and placed it in a slingshot, ready to fire. Through this self-mutilating act, Jean symbolises his personal artistic struggles, and the often self-destructive nature of creativity.
