Brooklyn-based artist Genesis Belanger's work inhabits the sweet spot between the beautiful and the strange. Belanger's sculptures often mix consumer goods with a generous pinch of surreal, creating objects that are strangely and uncomfortable familiar. Inanimate objects seem to come alive and take on human features. In this edition, the ambiguous sculpture walks the line between model hand and independent sentient being. Belanger's aesthetic is characterized by a deliberate choice of materials. For her collaboration with Case Studyo, the artist trades her trademark pigment infused unglazed ceramics for paginated bronze, witfully playing with the viewer's perception and hierarchy of categorisation attached to certain materials. A bold choice with a majestic result; the metal alloy seemingly transforms to living skin and the object becomes alive, its polished nails creating a stark but fitting contrast with the classic bronze patina and breathing even more life into the sculpture. Custom to the artist's work, the material enhances the narrative and entices the viewer's imagination.
