I often depict women in my work as ocean deities who serve as the goddesses and protectors of the seas. This particular piece was inspired by the imagery of Our Lady of Sorrows, depicted in her mournful state. The arrangement of bleached coral frames her face, similar to the way her cloak would. Iridescent, pearl-like tears stream down her face as she weeps in response to the human activity that directly contributes to climate change and its rapid impact on our oceans. Coral reefs, known as the "rainforests of the sea," are home to nearly a quarter of all marine life. Between the continuous absorption of CO2 emissions and the increasing acidity levels contributing to the warming of our oceans, coral reefs are bleaching and dying off at an alarming rate.
