One type is only found in the mountains, in the Mauka region, and one type is only found by the ocean, in the Makai region of the island. Each blooms a flower that is half-blossomed. It is said that each blossom represents lost lovers that when put together create a whole. There are different stories of Pele being jealous of their love, chasing them or wanting to destroy them. There are other stories of Naupaka being a princess and him being a commoner, or a fisherman, a tale of forbidden love. I tried to be as respectful as I could and do as much research as I could. At the end of the day I'm very happy with how they came out. For the Makai piece I tried to give it a horizontal gradient, to represent the horizon, the sky, the ocean. Whereas for the Mauka side I did a vertical gradient with vertical bands of color that are meant to represent the mountains and cliffs in Hawaii." - Kamea Hadar.
