Robert Lazzarini’s M1 presents a three-dimensional map of Shadow Moiré Topography, a technique developed around the dawn of commercial scanning technology. Using the female mannequin as his subject, the artist projects moiré patterns onto objects much like the Op Artists of the 1960s did on canvas. Lazzarini is known for his warped versions of familiar objects which exist in the space between realism and abstraction, formality and expression. The use of Shadow Moiré techniques anticipated the digital contour mapping used in contemporary 2D and 3D scanning. The pattern echoes Surrealist photography’s interest in doubling, which speaks to the unsettling repetitions that lie deep at the heart of the Surrealist aesthetic. Lazzarini presented his Shadow Moiré Topography paintings in a solo show at Dittrich Schlechtriem in Berlin this past January.
