A multi-talented DJ, musician, curator, and artist, Spencer Sweeney’s body of work defies categorization, ranging from vivid abstract paintings to installation pieces to more traditional self-portraits. Lurker is based on a painting from Sweeney’s solo show, She, held at C L E A R I N G in Brussels last spring. Like many of Sweeney’s more colorful abstract works, it recalls the work of Henri Matisse and the Fauvist movement of the early twentieth century. He uses broad, painterly strokes in a rainbow of unusual colors that challenge traditional ideas of perception, space, and light.
