Description

MacGregor Harp. "What Was The Question". 24" x 20". Signed edition of 50. $150. What Was The Question is based on a flower painting by MacGregor Harp recently displayed at David Peterson Gallery in Minneapolis in a group show with Joshua Abelow, Sadie Laska, and Adrianne Rubenstein. The show's press release reads, “one strategy to complete a maze – the kind you might encounter on the children’s menu at a restaurant – is to begin at its finish line, working your crayon back to the start”. Harp takes this approach to explore painting and the disparity between what constitutes an ‘original’ work of art and what is seen as mere trivial decoration by building a painting system in which uniqueness can be embedded inside a unified syntax. This system includes working from “how-to” YouTube videos and other instructional experiences, creating visual tension through the paradox of irregular uniformity in his flower painting series.
