Description

Sue Williams. The Shock of the New. 20 EDITION SIZE. 500.00 (USD) PRICE. THIS ARCHIVAL INKJET PRINT IS ACCOMPANIED BY A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY THAT IS SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE ARTIST. Created in 1995, Shock of the New was one of William's favorite pieces until the floods of Hurricane Sandy destroyed the original work. Williams' work tackles such topics as infidelity, battery and rape through drawing what she has referred to as "psychedelic doodles" and acknowledging that "reality is a bit embarrassing". The title comes from a widely known 1980 documentary television series which addressed the development of modern art since the Impressionists. Throughout eight episodes, it examined art's relationship with the pleasures of nature, the relationship between art and authority, the surrealists' attempts to make art without restrictions, among other things. We've resurrected the piece one year later, while reflecting on Robert Hughes' famous quote from The Show of the New that "In art there is no progress, only fluctuations of intensity.".
