Richard Woods. Big L, 2013. Archival pigment print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper, 308gsm. Edition of 50, signed and numbered. 65.7 x 50 cm. £295 introductory price. Liverpool Biennial is delighted to present a new limited edition. With only 50 prints available, it is an opportunity to own a work by a leading contemporary artist. Big L has been created by artist Richard Woods and is the second limited edition offered by Liverpool Biennial. Richard Woods transforms real surfaces into cartoon-like versions. His art combines art, architecture and design. He uses household gloss paint, plywood and laminate to transform urban buildings into mock-Tudor cottages; he coats concrete pillars with chinz wallpaper, and covers floors with crazy paving in different colours. For Liverpool Biennial, Woods has made a very special edition titled Big L – with the 'L' standing for Liverpool. This new work is a celebration of Innovation-Investment-Progress, his commission in the old Rapid Hardware store for the Liverpool Biennial Festival in 2008. Woods created a statement around positive thinking, using an iconic former DIY shop to create a repeated pattern of ‘feel-good’ logos. These logos included words like ‘innovation’, ‘progress’ and ‘build’ and were in situ alongside a floor covered in zig-zag fake wood print.
