The exhibition was an Artforum Critics' Pick, describing Hughes' paintings as "an assortment of breezy and prismatic landscapes that plumb the depths of her idiosyncratic interior and exterior world views". Split Ends invites the viewer to peer into Hughes' anomalous world through tree trunk window panes that cascade into dappled landscapes reminiscent of Matisse and the plein air paintings of Gustav Klimt.
