Based on a painting of the same name, Covenant is a new Damien Hirst print published by Other Criteria and available with diamond dust. Originally inspired by a Victorian tea tray found by Hirst, the ‘Kaleidoscope’ works are made by placing thousands of different coloured butterfly wings into intricate geometric patterns. The series references the spiritual symbolism of the butterfly, used by the Greeks to depict Psyche, the soul, and in Christian imagery to signify the resurrection. Whilst the butterfly is one of Hirst’s most enduring 'universal triggers', in the Kaleidoscope works the artist diverges from his earlier use of the insects. Rather than using live – or complete dead – butterflies, here Hirst uses only the iridescent wings, divorcing the idealised image from the 'real thing'.
