"Simultaneously uncovered and recovered, "Islandia's" history is continuously written as its existence is shaped throughout time. Through both calculated and incidental discovery, Oviedo's self-guided documentation has tracked the ecological and bio-cultural shifts taking place among this amorphous region. Floating, sinking, and swimming, both the geography and its inhabitants are curiously engaged through years-long investigation into their environmental and materialistic significance, creating a body of work that is equally preserved and manipulated. A once strictly nautical vernacular has since been translated throughout a diverse range of media including paper, aerosol paint, and vinyl, nodding to the notion that "Islandia's" borders extend far beyond the oceans' reach. A combination of biological symbols and historical archive complete much of Oviedo's work, denoting a temporal and geographical reference, yet universal nature of his work. What has been captured now is neither solely the work of the past, or state of today, but rather a sign of the future and what is to come."
